2014 - What's to look forward to? Volume 2

In the second of our posts looking forward to music in 2014, Jon Hall previews his highlights of the year to come....

Mogwai – Rave Tapes
The Scottish Post-Rockers are back this year to provide a refreshing change from traditional rock music which still dominates one half of the musical spectrum. With the exception of Sigur Rós Post-Rock has failed to capture the world’s imagination and although you’re never going to see a number one album consisting of soundscapes, the use of innovative techniques with traditional rock instruments becoming a key feature of current music. Bruce Springsteen - High Hopes
The Boss is describing his latest material as “the best he has written in decades.” Co-written with Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello it promises to be a loud and brave album. As well as the standard E-street sound, the addition of Morello who is one of the most innovative guitarists of all time, suggests we will be hearing some new sounds from Bruce as he offers us his eighteenth instalment. Limp Bizkit- Stampede of The Disco Elephants
For the title alone this album is going to be worth a listen. Hopefully Limp will prove themselves once and for all. Because behind the novelty they are capable of writing dark, energising music, but Durst’s immaturity has a habit of overshadowing their potential. He’s a great vocalist and a captivating front man but he has never really had anything meaningful to say.

The Horrors – Title Unconfirmed
There’s not much you can predict about an album from a band who have stretched from garage rock to lush synth pop, but they are one of the best bands around and with any justice this will be the album which pushes them into the stratosphere. Farris is unlikely to rap anytime soon, but musically I expect The Horrors to deliver the type of fresh progressive music that I hope will flourish this year. Expect powerful vocals, imaginative structures and an eclectic range of sounds.

Other things to keep an eye on:
Azealia Banks will release her album this year and whether it is good or bad it is sure to turn heads and shake up a sagging Hip-Hop scene which is becoming increasingly narrow and male dominated. The Strokes are talking of a new release and this one will be make or break for them. Lady Gaga and jazz singer Tony Bennett are dueting on a double album at the end of this year. With Gaga stripped of her fads she will be able to shine as the talented musician she sometimes loses behind the fame.
